Univision news program “Primer Impacto” talked to one of the mothers of the victims from the Orlando tragedy, and the interview is absolutely heartbreaking.
Doña Aurelia Martínez is the mother of Juan Chávez Martínez, one of at least three undocumented immigrants who were at Pulse the night of the tragedy. While two of those men survived, Chávez Martínez was tragically killed.
Juan left Mexico for the United States nearly a decade ago to help support his parents, who are poor farmers in a tiny village of 800 in Hidalgo, Mexico. Juan worked at restaurants and hotels, and like millions of immigrants here in the United States, frequently sent help back home to his family.
While all of Doña Aurelia’s nine children help her, Juan was her “right hand,” making sure she could put enough money together to tile the dirt floor of the family’s home. The small house is still mid-construction.
In the video, ducks are seen fluttering. The family raised them because they were a favorite pet of Juan’s.
According to other Spanish-language media, the Mexican Consulate in Orlando has made arrangements to return Juan’s body back to his family at no cost.
“He supported me,” sobbed Doña Aurelia. “All my children help me, but only a little because they are married and have children, they have their families. They didn’t help me as much as he helped me.’
