The America’s Voice – Netroots Nation “Immigration Blogger Scholar” Contest is Here!

The annual Netroots Nation Convention, entering its fourth year now, is a unique gathering of progressive bloggers, activists, issue campaigns, and candidates.

This year, America’s Voice will send 8 immigration bloggers to Pittsburgh, PA to attend the convention, with the help of the Netroots Nation planning committee.

America’s Voice is committed to supporting a vibrant and independent pro-migrant blogosphere and we believe it is critical for bloggers who write about immigration to be well-represented at Netroots Nation.

So, do you know someone working at the intersection of new media and immigration, who blogs on the issue, and who needs some help getting to Netroots Nation?

How Do I Apply for a Scholarship?

All you need to do is answer the questions at the link below. We suggest writing your answers in Word or Notepad and copying them over to the text fields on our application page. Once you click “submit,” your application is complete and you should receive an email letting you know that you’ve applied. If you have any questions, comments, or problems regarding the application, you can contact us at info@americasvoiceonline.org – just put “immigration blogger” in the subject line.

The answers that you submit in your application are private, however, if you are selected as a blogger-scholar, we may ask to publish some of your answers on our website. You will have the opportunity decide whether you would like to be featured, and this will not affect your scholarship in any way.

Selection Criteria and Timeline

The America’s Voice and Netroots Nation scholarship selection committee will rely on several unique factors to select contest winners. Above all, we are interested in hearing your personal story and your personal connection to the issue, what drives your work, and why you would like to attend Netroots Nation.

It’s important that we select people who are not only passionate about blogging and/or online activism, but who bring a unique and underrepresented perspective to the Netroots Nation Convention.

Since time is short and we want to let winners make their travel arrangements, all applications are due by Monday, July 20th. Selections will be posted on our website by August 1st, but winners will be contacted via email as soon as they are selected.

Our selection committee includes:

Raven Brooks, Executive Director of Netroots Nation

Joaquin Guerra, New Media Campaign Director for SEIU’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform Campaign

Maribel Hastings, veteran journalist, author of the Spanish language immigration site – http://MaribelHastings.com and senior consultant at America’s Voice

What does the scholarship provide?

The America’s Voice/Netroots Nation “Immigration Blogger Scholar” Scholarship provides the recipient one full registration to Netroots Nation 2009, a travel stipend, and shared hotel accommodations from August 13 to August 16, 2009.

Winners will need to bring money for food, though a few meals are sponsored by Netroots Nation. Scholars may also take part in a welcoming dinner and other scholar-only activities.
