Groups Gearing Up for Get-Out-the-Vote Effort in Virginia Ahead of the Nov. 7 Election

Woodbridge, VA – With five days to go in one of the most consequential elections of the Trump Presidency, NextGen America, CASA in Action, Center for Community Change Action, and America’s Voice Virginia are gearing up for a frenetic last push to get out the Latino vote in Virginia to combat the hateful and anti-immigrant campaign being run by the Virginia Republican Party and their candidate for governor and standard bearer, Ed Gillespie.
We are establishing a presence by connecting with Virginians who share our values and urging to be voters. We are speaking to diverse voters in the most heavily Latino precincts in our top races, including in Woodbridge, Manassas, Chantilly, Fairfax, Springfield, Dumfries, and Manassas Park.
Since August, as a small sample of what groups all around the state are doing, we have door-knocked over 50,000 doors. By election day, we will complete over 56,000.  We are texting over 20 thousand voters and reaching hundreds of thousands of Virginians through television ads, radio ads, and our digital program.
Dozens of people are canvassing ahead of the elections and the press is welcome to attend the daily canvass kick-off:
Location: Every day at CASA in Action: 1455 Old Bridge Rd, Suite # 203, Woodbridge, VA 22192.
Canvassing hours:
Friday3pm
Saturday Nov 4: 10am
Sunday Nov. 512noon
Monday Nov. 6: 11am
Gustavo Torres, President of CASA in Action:
The Latino community cannot lose focus, which is to say that we must win this fight for our families and our future.  As we push this election over the line in these last few days, we are focused on creating a culture of permanent voting, not only for this election but the many future ones to come.
Grecia Lima, Deputy National Political Director, Center for Community Change Action:
With four days until the election, our canvassers and volunteers are giving their all on the doors and on the phones. We have used every tool within reach to talk to Latino and immigrant voters in Virginia about why Dr. Northam is the best candidate for Governor. Dr. Northam understands that we are stronger together, and that there’s too much at stake to waste time pitting Americans against one another. On Tuesday, voters will decide the future of the Commonwealth, and we know they will choose union and prosperity.
Tom Steyer, President of NextGen America:
We are doing everything we can to turn out voters in Virginia and to send a clear message to Ed Gillespie that hateful rhetoric and race-baiting tactics do not work in Virginia and will not work anywhere in this county. With four days to go, we will organize, mobilize, and elect Ralph Northam, Justin Fairfax, Mark Herring, and Democrats up and down the ticket to deliver a positive vision for every Virginian.
Julio Lainez, State Director for America’s Voice Virginia:
It’s crunch time in Virginia. The Virginia GOP and Ed Gillespie have run one of the most vile and anti-immigrant campaigns that we have ever seen in the commonwealth. As a Virginian, I am appalled by the vitriol and dog whistles that have been used to demonize our hard-working immigrant community. The pool of candidates running for the House of Delegates this year – among them Elizabeth Guzman, Kathy Tran, Hala Ayala, Jennifer Carroll Foy, and Danica Roem – prove that diversity does make us stronger.  It is time to turn that hate into political power and go out on November 7th to send a clear message that Virginia has no place for these horrible tactics.
