Mark “Haiti’s So Screwed Up Because It Wasn’t Colonized Long Enough” Krikorian has done it again. In his latest at National Review, the anti-immigrant director of the nativist Center for Immigration Studies argued that Republicans should reject a long-term budget deal in favor of a weapon against executive action. And fiscal measures will be necessary, he believes, because impeaching Obama is a pipe dream. That’s when he dropped this nugget (emphasis ours):
Impeachment is out of the question; there is almost nothing the first black president could do that would lead to his impeachment. Yes, it’s a double standard, but Obama was only nominated and elected because of his race, so his de facto immunity from impeachment should not come as a surprise.
Really, Mark Krikorian? This view isn’t just offensive — it’s laughable, and Krikorian himself must know it. But, he is the guy who crafted the disastrous self-deportation strategy that led to Mitt Romney’s crushing defeat. And he’s the guy who got really worked up over the pronunciation of Sonia Sotomayor’s name. So, there’s that.
We think Krikorian is forgetting the part where impeachment would be a huge mistake for Republicans because 1) Obama would be the second Democratic president in a row they’ve impeached, after 2) a Congressional session in which they famously did absolutely nothing, which is probably why 3) Congress has even lower approval ratings than Obama. How about those factors?
As for Obama, he has realized that Americans want results from their leaders – and he is finally going to act.
