Thousands of Texas Dreamers Set to Lose DACA as Renewal Deadline Passes

Austin, TX – At midnight last night, the Trump Administration’s arbitrary deadline to accept DACA renewals passed, and now Dreamers are no longer able to reapply for another two-year extension of the successful program. According to HuffPost, 28% of DACA recipients in Texas who were eligible for renewal did not renew, meaning that thousands of Texas Dreamers stand to lose their protections from deportations in the next six months.

Mario Carrillo, State Director of America’s Voice: Texas, said,“Texas is home to 124,000 DACA recipients, and because of this program, Dreamers have been able to further contribute to the state that they call home. The passing of this arbitrary deadline means that Dreamers stand to lose jobs, homes, and the protection from deportation offered by DACA long before theMarch 6 termination of the program.

“And after March 6, thousands of Dreamers will start losing status every single day unless Congress moves quickly on legislation to permanently protect immigrant youth. The vast majority of Americans want a Dream Act that provides a path towards citizenship for Dreamers, and we will continue to pressure Congress to do the right thing.”
