America’s Voice Praises Senator for Commitment to “PRACTICAL AND EFFECTIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM THIS YEAR”

Under the chairmanship of Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees, and Border Security conducted a hearing yesterday on border security. After listening to testimony for several witnesses at the hearing, the Associated Press quoted Senator Schumer stating that “we can pass strong, fair, practical and effective immigration reform this year.”

“Senator Schumer is providing strong leadership on an issue whose time has come,” said Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice. “He is not deterred by the fact that there will always be opposition from hardliners to comprehensive immigration reform. But he gets what the majority of Americans get: if we as a nation are to significantly reduce illegal immigration we must combine border security measures with a crackdown on illegal hiring and worker abuse, an earned legalization component for those hard working immigrants already in the U.S. without immigration status, and a reformed and controlled legal immigration system. This combination is the best way to ensure that we truly get control of our immigration system.”

During the hearing, Senator Schumer cited reports from Customs and Border Protection officials that show the number of people arrested trying to cross U.S. borders illegally has dropped. According to those same reports, the number of people captured along the border with Mexico between Oct. 1 and May 15 was down 27 percent from the same period the previous year. Along the U.S-Canada border, the number was down 13 percent. While these are encouraging signs, Congress must take the bull by the horns and pass comprehensive immigration reform to achieve full control over the broken immigration system.

“Senator Schumer is right, Congress must move forward on comprehensive immigration reform this year.” continued Sharry. “The American people want practical solutions to tough problems, and they want them now.”
