During campaign, Nirenberg was vocal opponent to anti-immigrant SB4 and pushed San Antonio to sue Texas

Austin, TX –  San Antonio City Councilman Ron Nirenberg defeated incumbent Ivy Taylor to become the next mayor of San Antonio in Saturday’s runoff election. Taylor’s defeat is proof of the growing momentum against SB4, Texas’ anti-immigrant “show me your papers” law, as she opposed San Antonio’s city council vote to sue the state of Texas.

Councilman Nirenberg said of SB4 during the campaign:

I’ve said from the beginning I agree with local law enforcement that SB4 is bad legislation. I don’t think the state government should punish local law enforcement for the federal government’s failure to do its job.

Said Mario Carrillo, Texas State Director at America’s Voice:

We commend Mayor-elect Ron Nirenberg for standing with San Antonio’s and Texas’ vibrant immigrant community by opposing SB4, and we congratulate him on his victory. As police chiefs across the state have noted, SB4 will only make Texas less safe by driving immigrants further into the shadows and by punishing law enforcement officials who refuse to enforce this discriminatory policy.

Advocates across the state will continue to push other cities and localities to join the movement against Gov. Abbott’s anti-immigrant agenda and to ensure that Texas remains a welcoming state to all.
