Rep. Luis Gutierrez Calls on SNL to Dump Trump; Coalition Gains Steam; New Website Explains Why #RacismIsntFunny

Yesterday, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) joined the growing number of voices calling on SNL to drop Donald Trump from hosting the show on November 7th.

In addition to statements given on the House floor,  Rep. Gutierrez issued a strongly worded letter to the Presidents of Comcast and NBC Universal, writing:

“Having Donald Trump as a guest on every news and entertainment program is one thing, but allowing him to host Saturday Night Live is another.  It is a level of endorsement that says to America that every hateful and racist thing Donald Trump has said since the moment he launched his campaign is acceptable and no big deal.”

In addition to Rep. Gutierrez’s letter and statement, America’s Voice, Change.org, CREDO Action, Latino Rebels, Latino Victory Project, MoveOn.org, NCLR, Voto Latino Action Fund, United Farm Workers have generated over 360,000 petition signatures demanding that SNL rescind the invitation to Donald Trump.

The groups are all part of the #RacismIsntFunny Campaign which today launch a new website (www.RacismIsntFunny.com) that includes links and resources to the immigrant rights and allied organizations concerned about SNL’s role in mainstreaming racism, and provides information on how to join the effort.

According to, Juan Escalante, the Digital Campaigns Manager at America’s Voice:

“This is a key moment for Latinos, immigrants, and all of those insulted by and opposed to NBC and Saturday Night Live giving a free pass to Donald Trump’s blatant racism.  Lorne Michaels, Matt Bond, Brian Roberts, and Stephen Blake at NBC should understand that hate should not be passed off as comedy.  Had Trump made bigoted remarks about any other major demographic group in America, he would be shunned not featured. Evidently, Saturday Night Live doesn’t care about 55 million Americans and their allies.  So we will stand up and fight.  And we will either win a memorable victory or remember forever who dismissed our humanity and our equality.”
