BACKGROUND:
At 10am on October 6, 2016, a panel of experts convened by Ohio’s Voice and Cleveland Jobs With Justice will examine the economic, legal, and social costs of mass deportation.
What would be the impact of mass deportation on GDP, taxes, and industries – in Ohio and for the nation? Referencing a new report from the Center for American Progress, “The Economic Impacts of Removing Unauthorized Immigrant Workers: An Industry- and State-Level Analysis,” Amy Hanauer will outline the fiscal costs that would impact all of us.
What about due process and legal rights? We have already seen what mass deportation looks like, through the infamous 2008 raid in Postville, Iowa that rounded up nearly 400 immigrants workers in a matter of hours. David Leopold will review how American legal values will likely be trampled in order to carry out the expeditious deportation of 11 million people.
What about the cost to communities and families? Marilu Morales, a mother of four whose husband was deported in 2014, will share her family’s struggles and hopes to reunite in the country they call home.
And, as Deb Kline and Lynn Tramonte will explain, mass deportation is also not the policy that most Americans support.
