“A growing number of Republicans are jumping the sinking Donald Trump ship. Presumably they want some credit for taking such a stand. But it is way too little and way too late for that. These are shameless politicians who stood by for over a year as Donald Trump mainstreamed white nationalism and insulted every group in America except for white nationalists.
They stood by Trump after he called Mexicans ‘rapists’ and ‘criminals.’ They stood by Trump after he called for a ban on all Muslims. They stood by Trump after he attacked an Indiana-born judge because of his Mexican heritage. They stood by Trump after he attacked an American Muslim Gold Star family. They stood by Trump after he fat-shamed and attacked a Latina Miss Universe winner. They stood by Trump after he refused to apologize for his racist birtherism. They stood by Trump even as he welcomed fringe alt-right characters into the mainstream of the GOP. They stood by Trump even as his inability to respect others and tell the truth revealed itself to be his way of being.
Thomas Paine once wrote, ‘These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but that he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.’ There are courageous Republicans who stood up to Trump from the beginning, and they merit our praise. But those deserting the sinking ship now are summer soldiers and sunshine patriots. They’ve demonstrated no courage and deserve no credit.”
