Yesterday, Florida Governor Charlie Crist announced that he plans to run for the U.S. Senate seat that Republican Mel Martinez will be vacating in 2010. Crist, an immigration reform supporter, is a moderate candidate in a contrast to the recent Republicans that have tried to fill vacant seats.
“Governor Crist’s announcement that he plans to run for Senate is a breath of fresh air for the Republican Party,” said Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice. “Recent Republican Candidates like Rosanna Pulido in Illinois or Jim Tedisco in New York lost because they held views that were out of the mainstream. The Republican Party is trying to find a way out of the wilderness, and putting up candidates like Crist will make them relevant and competitive, particularly in states like Florida.”
Crist’s position on immigration is clear. He supported an immigration bill authored by Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) that would allow undocumented immigrants to remain in the country, work and get on a path to citizenship after paying fines and taxes and studying English. He has stated that Republicans need to reach out to Hispanics and refute anti-immigrant rhetoric, and has called diversity the “strength of America.”
Crist’s announcement comes at a time that the Republican Party is struggling to find ways to become more inclusive and adapt to its new circumstances. In today’s Washington Post, columnist Michael Gerson quotes former Florida Republican Governor Jeb Bush as saying that the GOP faces “dramatically changing demographics, especially Hispanics in swing states,” the “alienation of young voters” and an unprecedented drop in support among college graduates. Gerson’s column goes on to describe the recent reaction to Republican initiatives to start conversations on the future of the party and mentions a new approach on immigration reform as a potential key to the GOP’s recovery. Already, Congressional Quarterly, which publishes congressional race ratings in its CQ Politics section, has updated its rating for this race from “Tossup” to “Leans Republican”, based on Crist’s announcement.
“Republican candidates like Crist show that some Republicans recognize the change that the country has gone through and the willingness to adapt to a changing political reality,” said Sharry. “What remains to be seen is who will take leadership of the Party – moderates with new takes on conservative issues, or the stubborn extremists who continue to hurt the party and threaten to make it irrelevant?”

Candidatura de Crist podría apuntar a un nuevo día para los republicanos en el tema migratorio
Postura pro reforma migratoria es lo que necesita el Partido Republicano
Washington, DC-Ayer martes el gobernador de Florida, Charlie Crist, anunció sus intenciones de contender por el escaño al Senado federal que dejará vacante con su retiro el republicano Mel Martínez. Crist es un republicano moderado que apoya la reforma migratoria integral y que contrasta con otros republicanos que en los pasados meses han intentado llenar otras vacantes.
“El anuncio del gobernador Crist es un respiro de aire fresco para el Partido Republicano”, declaró Frank Sharry, fundador y director ejecutivo de America’s Voice. “Candidatos recientes como Rosanna Pulido en Illinois, y Jim Tedisco en Nueva York, perdieron por sus posturas apartadas de la corriente de pensamiento dominante en el país. El Partido Republicano está tratando de salir del desierto ideológico en que está sumido y echar mano de candidatos como Crist los hace más relevantes y competitivos, particularmente en estados como Florida”, agregó Sharry.
La postura de Crist en inmigración es clara. Apoyó el proyecto de ley del senador Martínez que otorgaba una vía de legalización a indocumentados que pagaran una multa, impuestos, y que aprendieran inglés. Crist ha señalado que los republicanos tienen que hacer un mejor trabajo para ganarse el apoyo de los hispanos y que deben rechazar la retórica antiinmigrante. Ha indicado que la diversidad es “la fortaleza” de Estados Unidos.
El anuncio se Crist se produce en medio de los intentos del Partido Republicano de ser más incluyente y de adaptarse a sus nuevas circunstancias.
En la edición de hoy del diario The Washington Post, el columnista Michael Gerson cita al ex gobernador republicano de Florida, Jeb Bush, diciendo que el Partido Republicano enfrenta “dramáticos cambios demográficos, especialmente de hispanos en estados oscilantes”, “la alienación de votantes jóvenes”, y una reducción sin precedentes en el apoyo de los graduados de universidad.

“Queda por ver quién asumirá el liderazgo del Partido Republicano: ¿los moderados con nuevas formas de abordar asuntos conservadores, o los tercos extremistas que siguen lastimando al partido y amenazan con hacerlo irrelevante?”, concluyó Sharry.
