America’s Voice Education Fund Praises First Lady for Honoring a DREAMer at Tonight’s SOTU

Tonight, during the President’s State of the Union (SOTU) address, the First Lady will be accompanied by DREAMer Juan Jose Redín.  Born in Ixtapan del la Sal, Mexico, Juan immigrated to the United States at the age of 10 and was able to achieve his dream of higher education thanks to California’s Assembly Bill 540, which afforded him the opportunity to enroll and excel in his studies at University of California, Los Angeles.  Now a U.S. Citizen and practicing attorney, Juan will join Michelle Obama tonight as an honored guest to watch as the President delivers one of his most important speeches to the Nation.

The following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice Education Fund, praising the White House’s announcement:

“I’m thrilled to see that Juan, a former DREAMer and beneficiary of California’s in-state tuition bill, will accompany the First Lady at tonight’s State of the Union.  As the President addresses Congress, he’s addressing DREAMers too.  There are millions of other young people out there who share Juan’s story and they too feel American in every way but the paperwork.  America is the land of opportunity, where every individual has a chance to succeed on their own merits. Juan’s story isn’t just about the Latino DREAM but also the American DREAM.  It touches me deeply to see the White House lift up this important story tonight, and I hope that tonight inspires young Latinos everywhere who ever dared to DREAM.”
