America’s Voice Education Fund Applauds Immigration Remarks in SOTU, Urges Continued Leadership

At last night’s State of the Union Address, President Obama called for both parties to work toward immigration reform, with a special emphasis on the “responsible young people” who would benefit from the DREAM Act.

The following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice Education Fund:

“We were pleased to see President Obama speak up for comprehensive immigration reform and DREAM Act eligible youth.  However, a true legislative breakthrough will only occur with Republican support.   Since such support is not in evidence, as the President acknowledged in his reference to comprehensive immigration reform, then President Obama should continue to use executive authority to provide meaningful relief to low priority undocumented immigrants and their families.  It’s the right thing to do from a policy and humanitarian perspective and the smart thing to do from a campaign and political perspective.”
