America’s Voice Applauds Nomination of Rep. Hilda Solis as Secretary of Labor
Nominee Has Strong Record on Labor and Immigration Issues

The U.S. Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee will host a confirmation hearing with President-Elect Obama’s nominee for U.S. Secretary of Labor, Congresswoman Hilda Solis (D-CA), on Friday, January 9th.  Below is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

“Rep. Hilda Solis is a strong and effective advocate for comprehensive immigration reform, who understands that the broken immigration system must be addressed for the good of American workers, American taxpayers, and immigrants who labor in the shadows.  We welcome her nomination as Secretary of Labor and hope that her appointment will usher in a new era — one that finally holds unscrupulous employers accountable for exploiting workers and restores a level playing field for all.

“Under the leadership of Solis and President-Elect Barack Obama, we look forward to the day where the rights of all workers are protected, and undocumented immigrants can come out of the shadows to register with the government, pay back taxes, and get on a path to U.S. citizenship.  Through comprehensive immigration reform, we will level the playing field to ensure better enforcement of labor laws, higher wages for all workers, and expanded tax revenues–and we will live up to our commitment to be both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws.”
