America’s Voice Responds to House Freedom Caucus Anti-Immigrant Wish List

Today, the House Freedom Caucus released a wish list of rules, regulations, and policies they want the Trump Administration to revoke.  Among the immigration-related items are calls to end the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, erase plans for the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA), and rescind the Morton and Johnson DHS civil enforcement priorities memos that work to focus deportations on sensible priorities.

The following is a statement from Lynn Tramonte, Deputy Director of America’s Voice:

“Over the past eight years, under pressure from the grassroots, the Obama Administration took a series of actions to focus immigration enforcement, recognizing that security threats should be a priority, not hardworking immigrants with roots in America.

In addition to shifting the focus of deportations, policies such as DACA and the plan for DAPA are broadly celebrated for recognizing that immigrants are valued members of our communities and deserve the ability to work, drive, and provide for their families without fear of deportation.  These policies – created and refined over a number of years – are a smart use of resources and good for America.

Now, House Republicans and the Trump Administration want to go back to the bad old days where hardworking immigrants saw their homes and workplaces raided; where deportations were chaotic, reckless, and random; and where Dreamers were held back from careers and opportunities because of paperwork and Congress.

Following the House Republicans’ anti-immigrant agenda would take America backwards at the expense of what’s best for community safety, our economy, and our values of fairness and opportunity.”
