Raise Your Voice: Virginia Should Steer Clear of Arizona's Immigration Law

Share This:

Despite the fact that Arizona’s SB 1070 is highly controversial, absurdly expensive, and likely unconstitutional, Virginia’s immigration hardliners continue to push for their own Arizona-style legislation. Here we go again.

In Virginia, anti-immigrant state legislators are trying to take the notoriously flawed policies of Prince Williams County statewide. The film 9500 Liberty illustrates the devastating impact this had on the county, and it should serve as a reminder to the state legislators who will soon be voting on this bill.

Their new legislation mandates that police check immigration status of anyone who they believe might be undocumented before they even are convicted with a crime or misdemeanor. This opens up the state to charges of abuse and racial profiling, while making it harder for police to work with communities to go after serious criminals.

These unconstitutional, discriminatory, and costly immigration policies could be voted on as early as tomorrow.

But there’s something that can be done to stop this from happening: you can take a stand and demand that lawmakers uphold fairness and economic security for ALL Virginia residents.
