SB 1070 at the Supreme Court: April 25th Will be Momentous in DC and Arizona

Share This:

On April 23, 2010, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed SB 1070 into law. Since then, there’s been a massive backlash against that harsh anti-immigrant legislation.

Almost two years to the day Brewer signed the law, the constitutionality of SB 1070 will be argued before the United States Supreme Court. This will be one of the most important civil rights cases decided by the court.

It’s not an understatement to say that the hearing and the resulting decision are historic moments for the civil and human rights of Latinos, Asians, and other minorities.  The civil rights implications of allowing the Arizona anti-immigrant law (and potentially the anti-immigrant laws of other states) to stand cannot be overstated.  We cannot go backward.  Groups like Somos America and the ACLU have already announced plans for an anti-SB 1070 march in downtown Phoenix, and you can bet other groups will follow suit.

At America’s Voice, we have been closely following this case — and will continue to provide extensive  coverage of this momentous hearing and its aftermath. It’s widely expected that the Court will issue its decision on SB 1070 by the end of June.

While there will be a lot happening in DC, there’s also going to be a lot of action in Arizona. For example:

Immigration rights groups are planning to protest when Arizona’s immigration enforcement law goes before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Advocacy groups such as Somos America and the American Civil Liberties Union will announce plans Friday in downtown Phoenix for a march against state and federal immigration policies.

To be held April 25, the march is meant to coincide with when the high court will begin hearing arguments in the federal government’s challenge to SB1070.

April 25th is shaping up to be an historic day for America. Let’s hope what we learn from the Supreme Court in June keeps us heading in the right direction.
