‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration: DREAM Act Could Become Reality

The Spanish-language press devotes much of its coverage today to the likely vote on the DREAM Act in the Senate this week.

DREAM vote this week. La Opinión publishes the editorial “A reasonable strategy” (“Una estrategia razonable”), arguing that the Senate should put aside electoral politics to pass the DREAM Act:

“It is true that Democrats want to win points with Latinos by passing this measure, and it is just as true that Republicans can also win those points by supporting a law that is not as controversial as others. Young people brought to this country as children by their parents should not be punished for this. Giving them the chance to go to college or serve in the Armed forces provides undeniable benefits to society at large.”

La Raza (Chicago), Univisión.com, La Opinión (Los Angeles), and Al Día (Texas) have more on the upcoming vote.

Colin Powell supports DREAM. EFE, Notimex, and the AP report on comments made yesterday by Republican Colin Powell, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Powell advocated for the DREAM Act and for a path to legalization for immigrants. The AP notes that Powell said that undocumented immigrants are:

“all over my house, doing things whenever I call for repairs, and I’m sure you’ve seen them at your house. We’ve got to find a way to bring these people out of the darkness and give them some kind of status.”

On Univisión’s “Al Punto,” Jorge Ramos interviewed Carlos Saavaedra of United We DREAM. On Telemundo’s political program “Enfoque,” José Díaz Balart interviewed Matías Ramos of DREAM Activist.
