‘Qué Pasa’ in Immigration: 1070 in Court; Utah List; LULAC Poll

Today a federal judge in Phoenix, AZ will begin to hear arguments from both sides in one of the lawsuits against SB 1070 — but the damage from the law is already being done, as a list in Utah that claims to name 1,300 undocumented immigrants continues to terrorize the Latino community and Hispanics across the country tell a pollster that the atmosphere of fear has made immigration a top issue for them come November.

The Associated Press reports that he first hearing will consider the suit filed by police officer David Salgado and community group Chicanos Por la Causa, which asks for an injunction to keep the law from going into effect on July 29th, with the Arizona state government arguing against the injunction. The lawsuit is one of seven filed against the state over the law.

One of those suits—the one filed by the federal government—has recently seen nine states step in on Arizona’s behalf, according to another AP article. The attorney generals of Michigan, Alabama, Florida, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Virginia have filed a brief arguing that states have the right to make and enforce laws regarding immigration.
