Univision: Senator is confident that the House of Representatives will pass immigration reform

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), one of the Senate Gang of Eight on immigration, says that he’s confident the House of Representatives will pass reform. In an interview with CNN this week he stated that he thinks that it’s good that the House will take their own approach.  While he would prefer to see a comprehensive bill from the House, any way they pass immigration reform will be good. Schumer said that “things are moving in the right direction.”

The S.744 bill that passed in the Senate includes a path to citizenship along with more border security. The Senator said that any House bill will also need to include a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.

The comprehensive plan being drafted in the House is said to require that immigrants plead guilty to being in the U.S. without papers and agree to five years of probation. At the end of those five years, people may choose to apply for legalization and citizenship. The House could also choose to pass immigration reform in pieces.

EFE: Activists across the U.S. double the pressure for immigration reform

Pro-immigration reform advocates have begun to increase the pressure on Republican Congressmen who are “key” to immigration reform. The August recess has started for Congress, and the pro-immigration reform community has decided to turn on the heat for Congressmembers before they return to Washington in September.

Across the country, religious leaders, business officials, and labor leaders, civil rights groups, immigration advocates, and others are gathering for events targeting key members of Congress. You can read about and view pictures of some of these events here.
