quepasaTens of thousands of people showed up on April 10th for the Time is Now “Rally for Citizenship” in Washington DC. The rally, which was put together by SEIU, the Center for Community Change and CASA de Maryland with the support of the Alliance for Citizenship brought together people of all ages who traveled long distances from all over the country to participate and put pressure on legislators to pass immigration reform with a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented people in the United States.

Among the speakers at the rally were: Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL), Senator Bob Menéndez (D-NJ), famous Puerto Rican singer Olga Tañón and Dolores Huerta, who underscored the importance of a comprehensive bill that will fix our broken system once and for all; a system that will recognize human dignity and keep families together.

Telemundo interviewed Sen. Bob Menéndez (D-NJ) who explained the importance of this historical moment and said he expects the Senate Gang of 8 immigration bill to drop next Monday or Tuesday before Wednesday’s Judiciary Committee Hearing. Telemundo also interviewed Rep. John Michael Mulvaney (R-SC), who believes immigration is the most important issue to take up after the budget.

Univisión interviewed Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) who explained the importance of putting pressure on legislators and said he hopes to see more calls and emails to members of Congress as well as mobilizations like yesterday’s rally in the coming months.

The rally was covered by all major Spanish-language outlets including Univisión, Telemundo, CNN en Español, EFE, AP, Notimex, AFP, La Opinión and others.
