Michigan Activists Join Nationwide Push for Immigration Reform

This is the year for immigration reform and Lansing-area activists are joining forces with others throughout the nation to demand paths to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and ways to reunite families torn apart by deportation.

Taking a stand in freezing temperatures on the front steps of the Capitol building this morning, local families and activists announced plans that include petitions, calls to lawmakers, marches and more to bring attention to immigration reform.

“We need to find a way to bring (undocumented immigrants) out of the shadows,” said the Rev. Fred Thelen, pastor at Cristo Rey Church. “Right now people live in fear.”

Thelen said he has families who come to him after a relative is deported, some who have been in Lansing for decades…

Today’s press conference was held in conjunction with similar events in Detroit, Kalamazoo and one scheduled for Grand Rapids later this month. Other events will unfold nationwide through the month.
