In Phoenix and Tacoma, Activists Push Obama to Stop Deportations

This morning, we wrote about the news coming out of this weekend’s United We Dream Congress, and their decision to focus on pushing President Obama to address his record rate of deportations.  During the Congress, the UWD members marched on an ICE facility in Phoenix to protest the separation of families.

Today in Tacoma, Washington, advocates with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network blockaded a similar ICE facility, conducting an act of civil disobedience in order to stop buses carrying deportees from leaving.  One woman was reportedly arrested after throwing herself under a van because her husband is scheduled to be deported today.

As one of the Washington activists, Maru Mora Villalpando said in a press statement:

There is a human cost to the President’s refusal to use his authority on immigration. We’re doing everything in our power to stop deportations. Now it’s time for the President to do everything in his power to give us relief.
