As Lou Headlines for Hate, New Coalition tells CNN to Drop Dobbs

DobbsThis week, Media Matters, a media watchdog group, along with a number of civil rights, progressive advocacy, and national Hispanic organizations, have launched a campaign calling on CNN to drop Lou Dobbs. America’s Voice is a proud partner of the campaign and its website, which launched yesterday at www.DropDobbs.com

Dobbs is a controversial “advocacy journalist”-slash-news-anchor, to be sure. First it was the leprosy nonsense. Then, calling the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce “an organization that is interested in the export of American capital and production to Mexico and Mexico’s export of drugs and illegal aliens to the United States.” Most recently, Lou has repeatedly incensed the public with debunked and racialized “birther” conspiracy theories regarding President Obama’s citizenship. Mr. Dobbs keeps digging himself into ever-deeper holes – and dragging “The Most Trusted Name in News” down with him.

Despite numerous calls on CNN’s president to put a lid on Lou’s racially-charged rants, CNN has yet to do anything about it. The network has even allowed him to headline for recognized hate groups lobbying in Washington this week.

As Roberto Lovato writes today at Huffington Post:

This week, Lou Dobbs is broadcasting his radio show from a national lobbying conference sponsored by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), an organization founded by a white nationalist and designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. At a time when studies document the growing link between anti-immigrant hate speech and increased violence against Latinos, Dobbs’ appearance at FAIR generates especially profound concerns among those targeted by his almost daily attacks: immigrants and Latinos.

Allowing Dobbs to broadcast his shows from hate radio row, where he’s been embracing “discredited birther Jerome Corsi,” is a troubling validation by CNN of FAIR‘s extreme rhetoric.

Finally, in case CNN’s Lou Dobbs Problem wasn’t big enough, Presente.org, one of the nation’s largest up-and-coming Latino online advocacy networks, is joining the call for CNN to take a long look in the mirror and dump Dobbs.
