DREAMers, Supporters, Families Continue Week of Action by Visiting House Offices

This morning, a large group of United We Dream organizers and supporters held citizenship classes and study-ins in the House office buildings, while other DREAMers took the initiative to visit their Representatives in Washington DC. It was the first time visiting Washington DC for many, and the activists wanted to raise their voices, share their stories, and tell their Representatives to support immigration reform.

Their stories were well enough received by Representative Scott Tipton (R-CO)’s staff. However when the DREAMers asked if it was acceptable to pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States in the office, Tipton’s staff refused, shutting the door while they were pledging. This was discouraging to those of us who were there, but we know that this is the time to leave fear behind and to stand for our rights.

As true warriors, the DREAMers continued their visits to other offices and eventually gathered with all the other groups and their families from different states. Saying that DACA is not enough, they all converged to put pressure on the House of Representatives to agree on a comprehensive immigration reform law that grants a pathway to citizenship for them and their families.  As the event ended, one of the DREAMers quoted a song from the Disney movie Hercules: “If I can be strong, I know every mile, will be worth my while.”
