On ABC's "This Week," Ann Coulter Slams Civil Rights Protections for Immigrants

Earlier today we shared with you Stephen Colbert‘s segment on Republicans and the Latino vote.  Turns out Ann Coulter was talking about the same topic this weekend during a roundtable discussion with host George Stephanopoulos, Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, former Clinton labor secretary Robert Reich and former Obama domestic policy adviser Melody Barnes.  But, as expected, Coulter was on the other end of the spectrum. And, what she said wasn’t funny–in fact, it’s pretty horrifying.

Yahoo News and ABC, among other outlets, picked up her comments about how Democrats are moving away from what she apparently views as pandering to African-Americans and are instead focusing on Latinos.  Coulter says that’s a step in the wrong direction because we at least “owe black people something.”

“Democrats are dropping the blacks and moving on to the Hispanics,” Coulter began, in response to Jorge Ramos saying that if Republicans didn’t start becoming more moderate on immigration, they would lose the White House for a generation.

She also said, “I think the way liberals have treated blacks like children and many of their policies have been harmful to blacks, [but] at least they got the beneficiary group right.  There is the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow laws. We don’t owe the homeless. We don’t owe feminists. We don’t owe women who are desirous of having abortions or gays who want to get married to one another. That’s what civil rights has become for much of the left.”

“Immigrant rights are not civil rights?” Stephanopoulos asked.

“No,” Coulter responded, “No. I think civil rights are for blacks. What have we done to the immigrants? We owe black people something. We have a legacy of slavery. Immigrants haven’t even been in this country.”
