America’s Voice Education Fund Responds to Rep. Goodlatte’s Immigration Announcement

goodlatteHouse Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert Goodlatte (R-VA) today announced that his committee will introduce a series of immigration bills staring with a mandatory E-Verify bill and an expanded guest worker program for agribusiness.  The following is a statement by Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

Rep. Goodlatte knows full well there’s a broad bipartisan bill that is likely to pass the Senate and a broad bipartisan bill that is about to be introduced in the House.  Rather than truly supporting these measures, he is introducing partisan piecemeal measures that went nowhere in the last Congress.

It appears to us that this move makes it harder for Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID) to find a way forward, and it makes it easier for opponents of broad reform to oppose comprehensive reform while claiming they support something.  While modernizers want the Republican Party to achieve a major policy victory and regain its electoral competitiveness with Latino voters, Goodlatte’s move seems intent on dooming both.
